The importance of post-secondary education in everyone’s life can never be overemphasized.
The above does not contradict the fact that higher education is accompanied by a lot of challenges and some people aren’t even aware of what post-secondary education is all about and how it can better improve their lives.
In a group chat with some of our readers, so many people have asked us the following questions:
- What is post-secondary education?
- Post-secondary education meaning in India?
We have got a lot of Indian friends who ask a lot about the previous. Maybe to access the level of education in India and to see if post-secondary education really matters to a majority or a few of the Indians.
However, I am not here to talk about Indians only but to have a deep insight into what post-secondary education is all about and why it matters. Yet everyone will be carried along for a better understanding of the topic.
Not just matters but matters a lot…
So many schools of thought have a different meaning to what post-secondary education is, but I bet the majority if not all they have said revolves around the following:
In a common way, the word “post” can be used to mean “after” which takes us to the meaning of post-secondary education as the education pursued after one graduate from the secondary school to obtain a degree in the desired course of study in what is usually referred to as “higher institution(s)”.
Today, various institutions are considered to be the source for post-secondary school education and this usually causes a lot of confusion to our dear friends asking “what is post-secondary education” they try to understand which school should be categorized as a place for post-secondary education.
Post-secondary education can be accessed in the following institutions:
Just like we have decided to include institutions that accept candidates who have graduated from the secondary schools only, to further their studies with them as post-secondary education students. Such schools are always regarded as tertiary institutions.
Schools like; polytechnics, colleges, universities, the institution of technologies or any other vocational institutions taken to be after secondary school.
The students of such institutions can be regarded as undergraduates, or even postgraduates students (people who have graduated from the tertiary institutions of learning)
It will interest you to know that post-secondary education in the USA like vocational studies requiring post-secondary education qualifications is regarded as continuing education.
Importance of post-secondary education
In the US, post-secondary education is often referred to as “high school”, a place for continuing education. Since one can continue his/her education in high school the following advantages are attached to it:
- Healthy thinking skills
One of the greatest benefits of post-secondary education is that it enhances one’s thinking skills. Yet gives a person the ability to analyze and find solutions to problems even under stress or while in haste.
It helps to develop one’s behavioral approaches in solving real-life problems and contributing to society through positive thinking skills.
- Better communication skills
Apart from healthy thinking, post-secondary education will improve your communication skills both in writing and speech presentation.
You will learn to become a better writer, to be able to present your ideas through writing or by presenting a speech to a larger audience without fright.
- Career development
Some people are not sure of ways to further develop their career, but the tertiary institution will always present them with options that will help them develop and have a better career in life.
- Better job employment opportunities
This is highly recommended for countries or organizations putting much emphasis on obtaining college degrees before considering one for a job offer.
The above is just to mention but a few of the benefits of post-secondary education. The importance of higher education in today’s society can never be overemphasized. There are even more you can include on our list based on your own personal life experiences.
It is very important for everyone who wants to acquire more knowledge to further their studies.
Challenges of post-secondary education
- The Financial challenge
This is one of the greatest challenges people encounter that can hinder them from continuing their studies.
Many students facing financial issues sort to apply for students loan but it is also annoying to find out that many students from different parts of undeveloped countries still don’t have access to students loans or even a fully-funded scholarship opportunity.
Many a time we see people quote ignorance as a dangerous disease. This is very dangerous when it prevents one from attending post-secondary education.
In many underdeveloped countries, people don’t have value for higher education, and as it could be seen in some African countries they do not have an interest in training a female child to the level of post-secondary education.
Such parents will quit their children from schooling and advise them to get married to any of the available suitors this is also considered a way to lessen the burden on the parents.
Today we see many reasons to send even every girl child to the tertiary institution hence the funds are available to sponsor everyone.
- Lack of interest
Almost everyone I know does things they are very interested in. People who don’t have an interest in continuing education will always speak against it even when they have the funds.
However, there are various factors that make people lose interest in post-secondary education. Some of the factors are attributed to the increase in the number of unemployed graduates, especially in undeveloped countries.
- Students confraternity
The issue of the confraternity in some post-secondary schools is no longer new…
Some of the unsecured tertiary institutions are filled with the activities o cultists who make the school environment very dreadful and in most cases, students happen to join cultism in the post-secondary education which in turn could bring a mishap in their career or even result in death.
Such types of persons can easily become school drop out when caught and expelled from the school. Then resources and time have been wasted in such an act.
There are many challenges causing huge hindrances to post-secondary education, but we are very sure a lot of people who are aware of the benefits of post-secondary education can’t benefit from it mainly as a result of the above-mentioned challenges.
Continuing your education after leaving secondary school, is a very important aspect of life.
It makes you become a better person in society, you will know your civic role and rights in the society you belong to and beyond.
Post-secondary school education has less to do with your age, the main thing to consider here is whether you’re interested to further your studies and if you have the resources to do so.
Is there any suggestion or challenges and benefits of post-secondary education you know? Feel free to share your thoughts about this post with us through comments.
