The National Merit Scholarship Program is a scholarship competition for U.S. high school students that began in 1955 and awards a total of about $35 million in tuition scholarships each year.

The National merit scholarship program aims to reward the academic achievements of America’s best and brightest high school seniors. The scholarship demands an outstanding curriculum vitae starting with a top-three ranking across the board, one of the highest weighted factors in a student’s total score.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), is a college scholarship competition for recognition and college scholarships. Through its sponsorship of this academic competition, the NMSC hopes to encourage the significant study of the world’s great academic works, skills in critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving, qualities that are developed through mutual respect for the viewpoints of others, and an appreciation that all people should be treated fairly and with dignity.
