We wouldn’t want to see you asking how to calculate carry over result or how to calculate carry over courses, rather we would love you to study this guide and learn how to avoid carry over in entirety, read to find out.
Yesterday I was with my course mates, at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), discussing issues concerning students in the higher institution of learning, where I was able to speak more on how students can graduate from the tertiary institutions without having carryover.
Many people believe that it is very difficult for students to graduate from the University without having a single carryover. This probably could be due to the increase in the number of carry over in Nigeria University.
What is carryover?
Carryover is a term commonly used in many schools in Nigeria, to mean resit for courses or examinations as a result of failure to reach a certain mark or grade point. Different schools, however, have their own approaches to this.
It is closely becoming a common phenomenon to see students been proud of writing a carryover or feeling reluctant about the existence of the word carryover in the educational system, this is absurd.
If you’re a university student or a graduate you might have encountered carryover or have seen a candidate with several carryovers in a semester and then accumulated for some number of semesters, which will affect the students Grade Point (GP)
I have been close to so many people who graduated from the university without having any carryover, I will share the secrets they disclosed to me as an undergraduate. This is to further ensure that I have a very successful academic stay in the university.
Can you tell me why I won’t share these tips with my fellow undergraduates?
How To Deal with Carry Over
Graduating from the university without having a carryover can be achieved following the simple steps below:
1. What are the rules and regulations in the school?
The first thing every student needs in the university environment is first-hand information on how the institution operates, ranging from the vision and mission statements, and their past records to their grading system. These I know pretty well are very important to every new student.
Most of the universities on their own try to schedule a student’s orientation program to enable students to know very well the rules and regulations guiding them.
In so many cases, schools could be seen hosting orientations from the department level to the faculty level and school-wide orientation.
Many times, students prefer to leave such events for other things they feel are more important to them, this is not supposed to be so. Every student should develop a sense of good values to participate in the school orientation programs so as to enlighten them further on what to do and how to do it in order to become a successful student.
2. Who is my school lecturer?
…carry out individual studies on different lecturers.
We all know that it is not easy to become a lecturer, and most of the lecturers have been lecturing for years. This is a great sign that they have seen different types of students and they know how to squeeze out the best in you to become a better person.
Knowing the type of lecturers you have is one way of knowing the part to academic excellence.
Different people with different characters exist, likewise lecturers with different points of views. Hence this holds to be true, lecturer A must always be different from lecturer B.
This could be evident from the way they teach, give a quiz or set exam questions.
Some of the lecturers are very serious about class attendance that even when you write their quizzes, do their assignments, school projects and examinations, they will trash it because your name never appeared on the attendance list. Therefore you are not a student in his/her class, as such your script deserves not to be processed.
When you have a better understanding of different lecturers who lecture you in the university, you will also know a better way of passing their courses.
3. Be serious with school assignments:
…study the hard way.
From time to time, students are usually given several assignments to handle. This could become very tedious to them especially for the working class students as they have different types of assignments from different lecturers combined with their work activities.
The above does not contradict the fact that being serious will help you get along with those things. You have to take your school projects and assignments serious. It will enable you to create time to do them one after the other and score even high.
No mark is too little to be overlooked…
Negligence over a particular course could lead to a server carryover. I recommend you to take every single course serious regardless of the credit unit it has.
Take the course that has 1 credit load as that which has 3 credit load, and this is a better way you can approach different courses as if it’s the best course you would ever have in the university.
4. Stay connected as a student:
Once you see yourself into the university, you have to be social and friendly to almost everyone that comes across you.
Link up with important persons and disassociate yourself from people filled with negative attitudes.
Feel free to join your department’s Facebook group chat, Whatsapp group chat or any other means of general communication decided by your department through which important information can be disseminated.
The above works best for schools that allow students to make use of smartphones while on the campus.
What if your school doesn’t allow students to make use of phones while on the university campus? Don’t worry here’s what to do:
Follow other course mates to be updated, be punctual in school activities, do not attend lectures late and always check the school’s notice board.
In my opinion, to stay connected, you don’t have to be connected with students only. You can make connections with your academic adviser or head of the department whichever one you think is welcoming to students.
5. Shun examination malpractice
This happens to be the last in my list, am sorry I did it that way…
Do you know why I have to apologize? I seriously have to, because this is one of the major reasons students fail and repeat courses in the tertiary institutions.
When you avoid examination malpractice, you are saving your life from carrying-over a course to the next year, that’s if you’re not given suspension or even expelled from the school.
I wouldn’t start telling stories about victims of examination malpractices and the harm it has caused them, but I will always advise everyone to stay away from it. Examination malpractice has crippled many students, produced many school graduates who could not read or write than to make mention of addressing the public.
So many universities in the country frown at examination misconducts and can go to unimaginable length applying their sanctions, there are usually no stipulated penalties for such but whichever one the management decides, will be applied and this will have a very big effect on the candidates academic performances.
We strongly believe that if one applies all or part of the above tips, he or she will be able to graduate from the university without a single carryover.
However, different tips work for different people but giving this a try, could bring a turnaround in your academic performances.
